Caleb Hill knew that he and Gus were dead; he didn’t feel like it, whatever it was supposed to feel like. His bones just didn’t ache anymore. And Gus was sprier than he used to be and Caleb noticed they were never hungry or thirsty. Caleb observed something else that was very strange. He could travel any place he wanted to go. Just by thinking about a place, in a snap, he and Gus would be there. What a way to travel! They could go through walls, and they could journey through other dimensions.
As he looked off in the distance, Caleb kept seeing a bright light and wondered if it was a big city. He always stayed away from towns. He never went to St. Louie or that San Francisco place. He and Gus like being out under the stars where a fella could breathe and see the whole world that the Good Lord made. Even when he treated himself to flour and sugar and occasionally some coffee, he always had to buy beans and occasionally a real treat like a little bacon, but he always got it from a small berg some place. Mostly he had just shot a rabbit or quail now and then, and there was always enough ground forage for Gus, and usually, they were fortunate to find water.
Caleb was slowly riding Gus along a dirt road while he passed some other riders that looked like cowpunchers. “Good Morning,” Caleb said. The riders neither returned his greeting nor did they look at Caleb and Gus. From that moment forward, Caleb became aware that he and Gus could go anywhere without being seen or heard.
He wondered if there even was a morning. There didn’t seem to be any “time” in the dimension where he was. In one dimension there seemed to be different hours, but in other dimensions he jumped to, time as he knew it, was different, or didn’t exist. Still, always he could see that very bright light in the distance that seemed to be getting closer. Caleb was not aware that he was constantly going in the direction of the pure white light.
Not always feeling alone, Caleb could feel other souls around him. He did not feel threatened in any way. He could only see others when he was in certain dimensions. He felt like he was waiting for something or someone, but did not know what or who. It was a contented feeling, so he continued as he had been.
Caleb wondered how this would all end. He had always been faithful about saying his prayers and reading the Good Book. He hoped God would love Gus as much as he does. He just knew there were other animals around here.
